VCU is one of the most impressive teams in the 2011 NCAA tournament. After shocking 6th seeded Georgetown, the 11th seeded Virginia Commonwealth Rams kept its tournament streak alive in its 94-76 win over number 3 Purdue on Sunday. The team earned the school’s first ever Sweet 16 appearance.
In fact, there are some who believe that VCU could win the national championship in 2011 if they play four more games the way they have played in the past 5 months. Sure, it sounds crazy, and it probably won’t happen, but they have been impressive, especially for a team that the experts didn’t even think deserved to play in the Big Dance.
VCU’s destruction of both Georgetown and Purdue has been surprising to the world of college basketball. Did you have them in your 2011 NCAA tournament bracket? Regardless of where you may have put them, the team is now America’s sweetheart, and most of the other teams in the Sweet 16 wouldn’t want to match up against them right now.
The Rams will hit San Antonio to play in the Sweet 16 on Friday. They will play the winner of Notre Dame vs. Florida State (FSU is winning right now).
The Rams’s Jamie Skeen said, “It’s VCU against the world. Nobody else thought we could do this. Nobody else’s bracket said that we’re going to make it to the Sweet 16. Honestly, if it was me and I was just a regular person, I wouldn’t put VCU in the Sweet 16. Who would have thought?” Do you think they could go all the way?
