Neil Patrick Harris, Tracy Morgan, and Barack Obama seem to agree that gay rights are fundamental civil rights matters. Now that gay marriage is legal in New York, coming out as a gay celebrity should not be as hard as it once was in history. The boy who once played Doogie Howser, MD is elated that gay marriage legislation finally passed in New York. The popular star of How I Met Your Mother and films like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle might be a well-known funny man, but when it comes to supporting equal rights for the LGBT community, he rarely makes any jokes.
“It PASSED,” Harris wrote via @ActuallyNPH on June 25th, 2011. “Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!”
More important to note is that NPH (as he is affectionately referred to by fans) is now, officially, an engaged gay man. That should not bother Tracy Morgan, politicians, or anybody according to Hollywood insiders who support gay celebrities.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS SUPPORTS GAY MARRIAGE
The actor and his partner actually made the emotional commitment to one another over five years ago, says the LA Times. The site also reported on earlier tweet confessions of the gay celebrity, sharing:
Harris was vocal on Twitter before and after the landmark vote Friday, posting, “I’d sure love to get married. Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today. My family would really appreciate it…”
To mark the historical event with a more romantic sentiment, Neil Patrick Harris’s long term boyfriend David Burtka, also had marriage to NPH on his mind. After the legislation that says gays can get married in the state of New York passed, one Twitter follower told the co-parent of the actor’s twins that he should “propose to his boyfriend.” In no time at all Burtka tweeted back, “I’ve already [proposed], he said yes! Thank god!”
TRACY MORGAN APOLOGIZES TO GAY COMMUNITY
Gay celebrities fighting to overcome prejudice against them as actors was recently highlighted when comedian Tracy Morgan took aim at gay men in June of 2011, going so far as to claim he would rather kill his own son that to have him grow up to become a homosexual man. Shocking the staff of his hit show 30 Rock, Morgan was publicly denounced by actress and SNL comedienne Tina Fey for his derogatory comments. As recently as this week, Morgan was still apologizing for what he now says was an un-funny rant at the LGBT community’s cost. Even people in NYC seemed to forgive the quirky celebrity his fateful rant of folly when he appeared and was not heckled at a live comedy performance this week.
BARACK OBAMA SUPPORTS LGBT IN NYC
However, the New York gay marriage vote got big press when President Barack Obama spoke at the LGBT fundraiser at the Sheraton hotel in downtown NYC on Seventh Avenue and West 53rd Street this week. With Barack Obama sharing his belief that each state should decide whether gay marriage is legal [not altering the Constitution], there seems no better time than now for two men to express their devotion to one another by trading their time on the red carpet for a space in front of the altar.
Congratulations to both future Hollywood husbands if they choose to wed, thanks for apologizing for your rant Tracy Morgan, and gold star from Hollywood elites for Barack Obama for jumping to the LGBT community’s defense. Coming out of the closet as a Hollywood celebrity in the 21st century ought to be easy.
