Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen vs. CVS Sunscreen

We usually head for the beach on Sunday mornings, but this past Sunday they had promised rain and strong rip currents, so we decided to take the pool out instead.

I decided to use the opportunity to do a little sunscreen test, as I had recently received the Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen as a part of a bzz kit.

Sine we live in South Florida we use a lot of sunscreen. Not only do we go to the beach all year round, but the sun is so strong that we put sunscreen on just to go for a walk or to the playground. I always look for the best deals on sunscreens, and for myself one of my favorites is the Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunblock, which I use for my face and shoulders. For the rest of the body I usually use a different sunblock as the face sunblocks are more expensive, but I need a good one that does not block the pores.

I was therefore very excited to try the Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen from Neutrogena, as I have had great experience with all Neutrogena products in the past. My sons are 6 and 3, but I am expecting my third son this July, so the sunscreen will definitely be used.

According to the bzz guide Netrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunblock SPF 60 protects babies/children with Purescreen, which is a blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are natural sunblockers and contains no chemicals.

Neutrogena Pure & Free:

  • Provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Fragrance Free
  • Oil Free – and non-greasy
  • PABA free
  • Waterproof and sweatproof

It claims to "rub in on the skin with no chaulky buildup", a statement I decided to test.

I first tested the Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen SPF 60 against the CVS brand SPF 30.

This is my three-year-old's back right after the sunscreen application.

The result:

While Neutrogena claims that the sun screen does not leave chaulky buildup, it seems to me that this claim is false. The Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunblock, did in fact seem to leave a more noticeable layer on the skin than the CVS sunscreen did.

I like the idea that the Neutrogena Pure & Free claims to contain only natural sunblocks and contain no chemicals, but as the average consumer this would be very difficult to figure out by looking at the ingredient list, as the ingreient list is longer on the Pure & Free than it is on the CVS lotion.

I guess as a mother I will either have to trust the company's claim and the name Pure & Free, or I would have to get a much greater knowledge of cosmetic ingredients.

The Neutrogena Pure & Free seemed to do its job, as it had promised. My son spent an hour in sun/shade while playing in the water, and when he got up the sunscreen still seemed to be visible, which I hope means that it still protects him. There were no evidendce of sunburns or sundamage.

Other than the Neutrogena Pure & Free being more visible, there were no noticeable differences between that and the CVS sunscreens. I will have to leave the more technical differences up to the experts, and I hope to one day find a test where the sunscreens have been examined by experts.

Did you ever hear about the Neutrogena Pure & Free Sunscreen? Have you used it on your baby?

What is your favorite sunscreen?
