New Hampshire Man Arrested for Catching Burglar

A Farmington, New Hampshire man arrested for catching a burglar; by firing his gun into the ground to scare a crook, it had the tables turned on him by police. Dennis Fleming, 61, returned to his home to find he had been burglarized. He then saw 27-year-old Joseph Hebert climbing out of the window of a neighbor’s home. It was at that point that Fleming took action. Like a scene out of a cops and robbers movie, he yelled “Freeze.”

“I didn’t think I could handle this guy physically, so I fired into the ground…He stopped. He knew I was serious. I was angry … and I was worried that this guy was going to come after me.”

No one was injured, and Fleming had captured a criminal. But wait…when the police arrived, they arrested the crook, and Fleming. Hebert faces up to 7 years if convicted. Fleming, if you can believe it, faces a similar sentence for reckless conduct.

“I have 14 grandchildren, I don’t want to be a felon and go to jail…I’m kind of wound up about it.”

County Attorney is reviewing the case and the Farmington Police Department declined to comment, reports Foster’s Daily Democrat, but people are outraged by the arrest. Rick Pelkey, Fleming’s neighbor, thinks the community should be thanking him, not arresting him.

The fear is that criminals will think it’s open season on homeowners. It just might be, if this charge holds. A New Hampshire man arrested for firing his legally owned gun into the ground on his own property to foil a crime should make people sit up and take notice. In a “Live Free or Die” state, you can bet that there are some ruffled feathers out there. People are ‘up in arms’, and rightfully so.
