Newspaper Gun List: Cops in Danger

Members of law enforcement are speaking out about the ‘gun list’. The list of gun owners names and addresses printed in the Journal News has put cops and prison guards in very serious danger. Inmates are using the list to find out where the guards at their prison or jail live and letting them know they have their addresses! It isn’t hard to imagine the terror these guards must feel when they realize an inmate knows their home address. In fact, it probably puts them at even more of a risk as they’re worrying about the safety of their spouses and children.

PhotobucketRockland County (New York) Sheriff Louis Falco told reporters at a news conference: “They have inmates coming up to them and telling them exactly where they live. That’s not acceptable to me.” Another law officer pointed out that around 8,000 active and retired NYPD officers live in Rockland County. Sheriff Falco wants the Westchester-based newspaper to remove the map from its website. He said that the inmates are actually taunting guards with the information they got from the paper. With all that law enforcement already do, including risking their lives on a daily basis, this list was the last thing they needed.

Lawmakers are planning on introducing legislation that will prevent this from happening in the future. Journal News released the gun list on December 23rd after the murders of 26 people, 20 of them children, in Sandy Hook Connecticut. What was their objective? Incredibly, the president and publisher of Journal News, Janet Hasson, says that just as the residents of New York have the right to own a pistol, they have a right to access public information. Does that make what they did okay? One woman on the list purchased her gun to protect herself from an abusive ex. Her first thought when she learned of the list, “Oh my gosh, he can find me.” For the safety of everyone involved, the list should be removed from the internet at once.
