NH Debate ‘Winner’ Has A Lot To Learn

Virtually every media outlet has declared Mitt Romney the winner of tonight’s NH debate at St. Anselm College. The reports are that Romney remained unscathed by any attacks from his opponents. Political pundits report that Romney is the strongest GOP candidate. Really?!

Romney v. Stephanopoulos

  • Romney referred to Ron Paul for instruction as to what the U.S. Constitution says about state’s rights.
  • Romney replied “I don’t know whether the State has the right to ban contraception,” to a question from George Stephanopoulos about this issue and the right to privacy provided in the Constitution. He then asked George, “Has the Supreme Court decided that States don’t have the right to provide contraception?” George replied, “Yes, 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut.”
  • Romney would not answer the question directly whether he thought Griswold v. Connecticut should be overturned. Instead, he stated that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Nobody was asking about Roe v. Wade.

Clips for the NH debate can be seen here, including the interaction described above.

Romney evaded direct responses all night long. The only thing he gave a “straight” answer to was his belief that there be a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as a “one man and one woman” union.

Toward the end of the evening he deflected yet another question and instead went on a tirade about the “soul of America” and his love for the country.

Huntsman is the only candidate that stood up to Romney and called him out on his proposed policies when dealing with China. Romney chose to take a position on a topic where his opponent, Huntsman, clearly knows more than he. Romney should pick his battles more carefully. Huntsman stated that Romney would start a trade war with China if his policies were to be implemented.

If you want a President that doesn’t know the answers, that will defer to his opponents (that would be Democrats in this case) for the answers, will fight with an opponent on an issue where the opponent is 100 times more qualified, and will keep America in a steady holding pattern because he doesn’t even know which direction to go, then vote for Mitt Romney.
