No Whine, Just Champagne Live Discussion # 71 June 25, 2009

Promo Primer

You wrote, edited, and polished. You submitted and suffered rejection. You revised, edited, and de-wased. A publisher said, “Yes.” You revised, cut, and added whatever your editor suggested. You created a website and a presence on Gather and Facebook. Maybe Twitter and Linked In too. Your release date arrived. You blogged, posted, and networked. Now what? How many books did you sell? A hundred? A thousand?

How many do you want to sell? Does it matter? Is getting published the goal?

A few of us No Whiners (Hah!) have done all of the above, perhaps more. I’ve queried agents and pitched to them at Writing Conferences. (I don’t have one… yet.) I’ve participated in promotion events at local libraries, bookstores, and a college. I made and mailed hundreds of flyers and bookmarks. I’ve given away dozens of pens imprinted with my website. (

Guess what? I’m still not driving a BMW. And I don’t have a movie contract either.

I’ve had a total blast writing, editing, and getting to know other authors. I’m in love with my books and my laptop. Is that all there is? Is this the end? My third novel will be published in 2010.

Guess what? I’m not shopping for a winter home on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

For this discussion, I’m interested in hearing various philosophies and ideas regarding promotion. Although I don’t consider the acquisition of money my life goal, selling a million books would certainly add to my personal validation as a writer. It would be so cool to have a full box of fan mail. I’d say “yes” to book groups, writing teachers, or bookstores looking for a speaker.

I guess the world just hasn’t discovered the literary merit of TALES OUT OF SCHOOL and its prequel, TALES OUT OF COLLEGE.

Sorry, Pat, but a discussion on promotion isn’t complete without it.

The group No Whine, Just Champagne will host a live discussion on the importance of book promotion on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 9:00pm ET. I hope you will join us. We want to know what you have to say.
