One Direction Gets Beat by The Wanted

One Direction has finally gotten beat by their British boy band rivals, The Wanted.

Max George, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes, Siva Kaneswaran, and Jay McGuiness have been telling anyone who will listen for weeks that their group is different from 1D—according to the guys, they appeal to a wider audience than Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan. And perhaps the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands is proof of their claims.

Max and the guys have pointed out that 1D is really big on the teen scene, making the covers of magazines aimed at young girls and singing sticky-sweet bubblegum pop. They’ve also tried to say that One Direction’s popularity is based more on the boys’ adorable faces than their music. However, even though their double entendre song, “Glad You Came,” appeals to an older audience, The Wanted also has legions of teen fans.

Both British boy bands got a chance to square off against each other in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands, a bracket competition that pits some of the most popular guy groups of all time against each other. Surprisingly 1D is already out of the running after getting beat by Mindless Behavior. Meanwhile, The Wanted will be squaring off against Westlife, who had to beat the Beatles and the Backstreet Boys to make it to the top four. And the Jonas Brothers are Mindless Behavior’s competition for one of the top two slots. The winner will be revealed on May 4.

So maybe The Wanted made a good point—it’s possible that they appeal to a wider range of age groups than One Direction, which means they got more votes. However, it’s still rather surprising considering how often dedicated Directioners take over Twitter with silly 1D-related trending topics.

So what do you think, are Max George, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes, Siva Kaneswaran, and Jay McGuiness really the best British boy band, or did Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan get robbed?
