One Direction’s Niall Horan and Liam Payne Sustain Injuries, Security Increased

One Direction members Niall Horan and Liam Payne sustained injuries as a result of a fan mobbing in New York City over the weekend. As a result, security has been increased for the boy band.

According to a report from Sky News, all the One Direction band mates—Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, along with Niall and Liam—left their 54th Street hotel together for some sightseeing and shopping. A mob of about 60 fans—girls, of course—awaited just outside, and from there things turned ugly.

Even though each of the boys appreciates his freedom—especially on down days (although those will be few and far between) the injuries Niall and Liam suffered have put an end to this freedom as they’ve known it thus far.

“Liam got pushed over and Niall was struck in the face. They had their hair pulled and Liam’s shirt got ripped. They couldn’t see where they were going and it was really, really dangerous. Nearby police had to calm the girls down,” a source close to the band reports.

It has been decided that from now on Liam Payne and Niall Horan, along with the rest of the band, will each have a personal bodyguard assigned to him. They won’t be allowed out in public without that security presence.

While this change in security measures is positive and will no doubt help keep all the One Direction boys safe, it’s a testament to the downward spiral of society that these measures have to come into play. Yes, the band is popular, and yes, the girls love these boys. But what happened to cheering, waving and being content to get that ever-coveted autograph? Is it now standard procedure in society to grope, push and injure in order to touch a pop singer?

Fans are a huge component in One Direction’s success, however the fans don’t own these boys. Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik should be able to walk down a city street without being hit (even if inadvertently) and pushed to the ground.
