Oprah Winfrey may be on the road to retirement, but that doesn’t mean that she’ll be resting on her laurels. Rather, Oprah will expand her empire from her daytime talk show, magazine and production company to now include her own personal network.
The Oprah Winfrey Network, which will be known as OWN, is set to debut this Saturday, January 1st, on what is currently Discovery Health. Discovery Health, currently included in the cable networks for over eighty-five million homes, is being rebranded by the media mogul to become OWN. Many major cable providers will air the network, including Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications, But some of those who do not currently carry Discovery Health, including Cablevision, plan to carry the channel, as well.
The deal could prove substantial not only for Oprah Winfrey but also for Discovery, as both Discovery and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo, Inc. own half of the new network and stand to gain major revenue from the increased viewership that Winfrey could draw.
Could it be that Oprah Winfrey is having second thoughts about what her legacy is going to be when her talk show ends this season? Or is she just fulfilling a long-standing dream?
