The original Batmobile, which was driven by television’s Batman, Adam West, just scored millions of dollars at auction. Although not as technically “cool” as the various versions driven by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney or Christian Bale, West’s bat car still possessed plenty of pizzazz for its day.
An Arizona business man scored the major prize for his car collection and it only cost him $4.6 million in cold, hard cash. That’s a steal for a piece of history these days.
Rick Champagne has reportedly been looking for prize cars for some 15 years, routinely attending Barrett-Jackson Auctions hoping to find just the right prize. He finally hit the mother lode with his latest purchase.
West’s famed vehicle was customized by none other than George Barris. He’s famous in Hollywood for his classic work. Reportedly, it took him just 15 days to build the black bat car in 1966. The work paid off. The original Batmobile’s sale tied with that of James Bond’s Aston Martin DB-5 from Goldfinger. Both cars represent the highest price ever paid for a movie car. Talk about your celebrity rides! One has to wonder if Champagne will drive his new prize or simply let it sit and soak up the fame it represents.
