James Franco seems to be popping up everywhere these days. Between guest roles on daytime soaps, Golden Globe nominated “127 Hours” and attending Yale University, the 32-year-old actor is definitely making the rounds these days. Franco even appeared at Sundance over the weekend donning a blond wig to promote his new film “Three’s Company: The Drama.”
James Franco’s next big gig, of course, is as Oscar co-host. The role will have him trying to fill the shoes of many funny men and women before him, and although Franco has appeared in his fair share of funny films like “Pineapple Express” and “Date Night” the question remains, is he funny enough for the Oscar Awards?
With nominations out tomorrow and Hollywood’s biggest award show just around the corner, you won’t have to wait long to find out.
Although James Franco and his beautiful co-host, Anne Hathaway, are both extremely talented actors it will be interesting to see how many crickets will be chirping in the audience on Oscar night. The role of Oscar host has traditionally gone to A-list veterans with a background in stand-up comedy such as Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg. Though the Oscar host gig is generally scripted, a well-versed comedian can more easily react to live moments on the fly.
While James Franco may seem amusingly quirky wearing wigs at Sundance, it’s going to take more than a new hairdo to crack up Hollywood’s elite and the viewers at home on Oscar night. Franco himself seems to be relying entirely on the Oscar producers to help make his job easy.
In a recent interview, he told the Associated Press, “I have no desire to make my mark on the hosting gig…I’m gonna do it as well as I can, but as far as writing my own lines and stuff like that, it’s not where my artistic, you know, passions lie. I have no need to etch my lines into there. I think they’ll do a great job and I feel fairly confident that I’ll be able to deliver whatever they give me.”
Do you think James Franco can bring the funny to the Oscars? Or are you already starting to suffer from a little Franco fatigue?
