Pastor Terry Jones: Preaching Hate For Profit

Filed in Gather Politics News Channel by on September 7, 2010 0 Comments

Pastor Terry Jones is the leader of the Dove World Outreach Center, the church responsible for organizing the upcoming “International Burn a Koran Day” on September 11th. The controversial event is just one example of the kind of hate being preached by Jones and his church. The group recently angered residents of Gainesville, Florida by putting up a sign reading “Islam is of the Devil”. Its website is also full of hate-filled rhetoric, including a blog posting titled “Top Reasons to Burn the Koran”.

What’s behind this campaign of hate? A visit to the Dove World Outreach Center website suggests that the church’s antics might amount to little more than a high profile multi-media campaign designed to drum up sales of Jones’ new book “Islam is the Devil“. The timing of “International Burn a Koran Day” would certainly suggest that this is the case – the book was just published in August. An ad for the book is prominently displayed on the front page of church’s website. The book even has its own website, IslamIsOfTheDevil.com, where visitors can order copies of the book. A Facebook page for “International Burn a Koran Day” links directly to that site.

The church’s plans to burn copies of the Koran on September 11th have certainly attracted plenty of attention to the book’s author. Controversy over the event has already prompted protests by Muslims in Afghanistan and Indonesia, according to the Christian Science Monitor. General David Petraeus has also condemned the event, warning that it could embolden the Taliban and place the lives of U.S. troops in danger.

It’s terrifying to think that Jones believes that personal profit is more important than global security. Of course, there is another explanation that is even more frightening. The church’s hate could be so strong that it hopes to escalate the conflict between the U.S. and Islamic extremists into an all out war between the Muslim world and the West. Either way, the actions of Jones and his followers are deplorable. Let’s hope that no one buys this book.
