Pepsi’s social vending machine is the latest step in social networking. Pepsi has literally reinvented how people will use vending machines. Now then, whether or not that is a good thing is debatable. Granted there’s little downside to being more social but that’s little upside to waiting longer for a cold drink when you are extremely thirsty.
The touch screen social vending machine will allow customers to not only buy a soft drink of their choice; it will also allow them to send gifts and video messages. People will be able to access the gifts and messages at any of Pepsi’s social vending machines by using entering codes received through email or cell phone.
Seriously, this is something you see in futuristic movies such as Artificial Intelligence. PepsiCo Foodservice’s CIO Mikel Durham said their social vending machine would “empower consumers and create new ways for them to engage with our brands, their social networks, and each other at the point of purchase. [It] transforms a static, transaction-oriented experience into something fun and exciting.”
Hopefully, Pepsi will be right because there’s little doubt that they spent a pretty penny in creating their social vending machine. It would be a shame if it just flopped. However, chances are it will become very successful when one considers the intense fascination people have with technology now.
