PlayStation Network Down (PSN): Sony Offering Free ‘AllClear ID Plus’

Although the Sony PlayStation Network is down (still), the company is offering complimentary AllClear ID Plus. The free identity theft enrollment is for PS3 and Qriocity members of the PSN. It’s a step in the right direction.

You asked for compensation, and Sony heard. In response, the company established a partnership with Debix, Inc., one of the industry leaders in identify theft protection.

Yippie! The company is making good on a promise made last weekend. At that time it said it will protect every member subscribed to its PSN via PS3 and Qriocity.

250GB Slim PS3Currently, the service Sony is offering is for members in the United States, but will roll out to other countries and regions in the future.

Essentially, with the PlayStation Network down, Sony is giving every member a $1 million identify theft insurance policy against another data breach.

Hopefully, nothing on a scale like this ever occurs again with the electronics juggernaut. But it’s comforting to know a whopping million dollars of coverage is in place.

In other words, if a hacker gains your credit card number from a future breach and charges your Visa, your credit line up to $1 million is safe.

That’s a lot of moolah. Do you know anyone on the network toting around that kind of dough on their major credit card?

Calm down; the party is not over yet. Here are a few things to keep in mind while the PlayStation Network remains down. It’s easy to get distracted about the service getting back online, but watch your email.

In the coming days, the company is mailing out step-by-step instructions on how to register for AllClear ID protection. Just know that you must register by June 18 and only on its website, not Sony’s.

Meanwhile, while the PlayStation Network remains down, its CEO addressed the calamity in a letter today. The good news is he said the service is returning in the “coming days.”
