Powerful Earthquake Strikes Solomon Islands

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale has struck off the Solomon Islands. The islands are located in the South Pacific. The good news is that the quake is not expected to produce a tsunami.

The quake hit near the islands about 19 miles beneath the ocean floor. The USGS locates the quake about 80 miles (129 kilometers) west of the island chain’s Kira Kira island.

The news is encouraging in that most people are all right after such a large earthquake.

According to Yahoo! News, “Papua New Guinea lies on the ‘Ring of Fire’ — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world’s quakes occur.”

The region has had several quakes in the last few years, but this one was quite powerful. There are no reports of injuries at this time, but it does seem like earthquakes happen in clusters. The powerful earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands at 17:09:38 Central U.S. time on Sunday.
