President Obama’s Grandma Injured in Car Crash

President Obama’s grandma was injured in a car crash Saturday night in Kenya. Sarah Obama, who the President calls “Granny” in his memoir Dream From My Father, was traveling to her home in the village of Kogelo when the car rolled into a ditch after the driver lost control. This was likely a very scary event for both Sarah and her grandson, because he likely wished he could have been there for her.

Reports on Yahoo! News claim the 91-year-old and four others in the car, including two body guards, were taken to the hospital. The grandmother was in shock upon arrival but released about two hours later and is now recovering at home. She said, “God is with me, because if you could have seen the wreckage that we came out of safe, one would wonder. You can see I was not injured save for this small scar on my right hand, and I am not even using a walking stick.” Of course she has bodyguards because she is a target for anyone in the area seeking to use some leverage against President Obama. She’s incredibly lucky she wasn’t hurt worse, and many wish her a speedy recovery from any pains.

Sarah Obama has only been to the United States a few times. She says people concerned for her from the United States and as far away as the Middle East have contacted her, but she tells them, “Hakuna tabu!” which means “no problem” in Swahili. Do you think it really was “no problem,” or is Granny Obama just trying to be brave for President Obama and the rest of her family?
