Princess Beatrice, 22, and Princess Eugenie, 21, daughters of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson seemed to have gotten lost on the way to the Lady Gaga concert and instead wandered into the Royal Wedding looking a fright.
While the Royal Wedding, or any royal affair for that matter, is always about wearing a festive and decorative hat, the Princesses may have taken it one step too far in their fashion choices. Beatrice donned a conservative beige Valentino Couture outfit, topped with a monstrous abomination: a ring about six inches high with what appeared to be a bow tied on top of it. In fact, the hat was so ridiculous that it spawned a Facebook page, and speculation as to whether it will become as legendary as the hat Aretha Franklin wore to President Obama’s 2009 inauguration.
Princess Eugenie, however, didn’t fare much better. Her Vivienne Westwood dress looked like Colonial-era get-up gone wrong: a pastel top that looked almost like a Monet painting with a boxed neck, long sleeves, and ribbons running up the front. The top itself looked too tight, as though it were ready to burst at the seams at any moment. Her bright blue skirt looked as though it might even have a hoop inside of it, although it revealed a bit too much leg to be considered truly Colonial. But it didn’t end there. In fact, it looked as though she didn’t even have time to have her skirt hemmed: it hung and odd angles, with gaps of fabric spilling all over the place. Her hat, while not as atrocious as her sister’s, was still a bit of a mess. The taupe Philip Treacy design sported a large purple flower and some sort of poof at the top.
Both girls did get one thing right: their shoes! Eugenie wore a pair of gold platform pumps, while her sister donned a pair of studded rose gold sling-backs.
Although it is their right to play with fashion as they so choose, it did seem in a bit poor form to wear such outlandish outfits to take away the attention from their cousin’s big day. The outfits also detracted from the stunning good looks of the sisters, taking attention away from their pretty faces and focusing on their garish fashion choices.
