What can you do if you want to get into the music business but any resemblance you have to Lady Gaga is in dreams only? Disc jockeys like Dale Siegfreid, host of “The Rock and Roll Classifieds” airing on Owatonna MN’s KOWZ 100.9 FM, had the same dilemma.
“Growing up I always had control of the car radio, I cranked up the stereo at home until my parents couldn’t stand it anymore, and I was the guy that always had an earphone attached to a little transistor radio I carried in my pocket.”
Dale knew that he was lacking musical talent and decided get into the radio business instead of forming a rock band. Even though his career of choice was to become an accountant (he’s a CPA in the firm of Larson Allen, LLP), music has always been a passion with him and he never gave up his dream of being a radio DJ.
In 1998, he went to KOWZ in Minneapolis and spoke with them about a potential radio program. The show would play music from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s but not just the usual songs but some that haven’t been heard for 30 years. The station agreed and since then “The Rock and Roll Classifieds” has been airing every Friday night from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM CT.
Disc jockeys are very insightful and the same can be said of Dale. When asked why most people consider Amy Winehouse a drug addict and not a musician like other members of “The 27 Club,” he answered, “The difference between Amy and Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and the others is that they established themselves as great musicians. They put out some great music. They never stumbled around on stage, forgetting lyrics, and falling down in front of their fans. Amy put out a couple of good songs but most people, when they think or her, think of drugs.”
Dale has done his share of interviews. He spoke with “Blood Sweat & Tears'” member, Steve Katz and a few years back he interviewed Booker T. Jones. When asked who he’d like to interview next, Dale answered with Paul McCartney. “I don’t want to interview him, I just want to talk to him; hang out with a couple of beers and talk music. In the music business, Paul is ‘King of the Hill.’ He always will be.”
Gather and Dale also discussed “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” “People are inducted in the Hall of Fame if they can bring in money. It isn’t that the members aren’t talented but why is ‘Grand Master Flash’ in it and not ‘Chicago?’ ‘Grand Master Flash’ was talented but he had one or two hits. What’s that compared to ‘Chicago?’ There are a lot of politics involved.”
