‘Real Housewives of Atlanta': Why ‘Brown Girls’ Formula Works

The Real Housewives of Atlanta season 5 was the most-watched premiere episode not only of the entire franchise, but in BRAVO’s history. This season two newcomers have arrived on the scene—Kenya Moore and Porsha Stewart. Porsha will appear in later episodes, but Kenya made her debut in the first episode.

A drama-filled premiere aired, giving viewers a dose of what’s to come all season long. The dynamics hold interest and are definitely explosive on camera.

What is the big draw for fans with the cast? NeNe Leakes interviewed with The Insider and credits the formula of having “brown girls” on the show.

NeNe said their show is super successful because “we are the only brown girls. You can always turn on the TV and see those Beverly Hills girls, those Miami girls, those New Jersey girls, [and] New York girls and you still sort of… get the same flavor, but when you turn and see the Real Housewives of Atlanta, you’re getting a group of brown girls.”

NeNe also adds it’s less “plastic” with the women on the show. Cosmetic surgery isn’t as prevalent among the cast.

“With us, we’re not so plastic surgery,” she added. “[On] these other franchises, everybody’s so plastic… We’re just regular girls. We’re really keeping it real, and I’m always surprised when people say, ‘Are you guys scripted?’ We’re so not scripted; we’re just a disaster.”

Season 5 will be a big year for everyone on the cast. NeNe is featured on the show getting ready to promote her new sitcom, The New Normal. She and Kim Zolciak have their rough patches to be ironed out, that’s for sure.

Is the fact the show has “brown girls” a huge reason why fans tune into watch?
