Technology does wonders! Well, it sure did for the new YouTube sensation Rebecca Black. The 13-year-old Black was literally a “no one” until last Friday; now, she’s a celebrity.
Last February 10, the official video of Black’s single “Friday” was uploaded on YouTube, which nobody cared about. But the video became newsworthy a month later, when comedian Michael J. Nelson tweeted its YouTube link and called it the worst video ever made. On the same day, Tosh.0 blog posted the same video under the title Songwriting Isn’t For Everyone. And then, the video started to receive millions of hits within days. According to YouTube, the video has been watched 18 million times up until now.
Good or bad, it worked for Rebecca Black
Although Black hardly received any supportive comment about the song, she continues to be the most discussed personality online. Trending for days on Twitter, Black’s popularity is now high enough to be compared with Justin Bieber. No matter what the song is like, this sudden recognition of Rebecca Black with the help of social media is certainly a huge deal, which doesn’t happen quite frequently.
