Remembering Michael Jackson–[video]

It’s hard to believe that it’s been just a little over a year now since Michael Jackson died. This time last year Los Angeles was pure pandemonium. There was hours and hours of traffic, lines of fans outside of the hospital, vigils, constant flow of Michael Jackson music video footage, the Jacksons movie special, the very public memorial service and of course his kids finally out and in the public eye–it was insane! It seemed to be in the news for quite a bit, but just a year later it doesn’t seem to be as big of a deal. There was a replaying of the Jackson movie on Vh1 and a block of videos as a tribute on MTV.

One thing I thought was unique was how MTV sat other stars down, who had covered Jackson songs in the recent years. It was a pleasure to see Michael’s work transcend one music genre and be used in angsty rock remixes and re-sampled in R and B songs. I am glad there was at least some tribute on every music channel. Everyone has been talking about Chris Brown’s emotional performance at the BET awards, which was a Michael Jackson tribute that included dancing to various Michael hits and singing to “Man in the Mirror.”

Some still believe that Michael was some kind of weirdo, monster–Wacko Jacko–but I think of him as an artist, as a genius, as child, as a giver, as a man with such great talent the world couldn’t even handle it. I believe he was misunderstood by many, but I believe he is missed.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson
