June 17, 2010 - Pebble Beach, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - epa02208190 Tiger Woods of the U.S. reacts to his putt at the 10th during the first round of the 110th US Open Championship on the Pebble Beach Golf Links at Pebble Beach, California, USA, 17 June 2010.

The overcast skies likely reflected the gloomy moods of many of the golfers who teed off at the U.S. Open on Thursday at Pebble Beach, CA. At the end of round one, top contenders Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were both over par at 4-over 75 and 3-over 74, respectively.

Tied for the lead after the rough first round are Shuan Micheel, Paul Casey, and Brandon de Jonge who are at 2-under 69. Six other golfers are trailing close behind at 1-under 70, including Mike Weir, Ian Poulter, and Rafael Cabrera-Bello.

Failing to make a birdie all day didn’t help Mickelson advance on the leaderboard.

“I just putted horrific. It’s very frustrating for me to miss all those opportunities,” Mickelson said on ESPN.com. “I don’t mind making a bad swing here, there, making a bogey here, there, it’s part of the U.S. Open.”

Mickelson took little consolation in avoiding any doubles saying, “I’ve got to make birdies. And when I missed those 5-footers and that 3-footer and a couple of 10-footers, it just was very frustrating for me.”

Woods is probably sharing that sentiment. He too did not make a birdie. Seems to me that when two of the top players in the world are both unable to make a birdie the course should be checked out. In fact, Woods complained about the grass being bouncy. We’ll see how springy it is when the tournament continues.
