Rick Warren’s son’s suicide details continue to emerge

New details were revealed about Rick Warren’s son’s suicide on Sunday, including that the youngest son of the famous Saddlebrook Church pastor and author reportedly died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to CNN. But Fox News reports that a supervising deputy coroner with the Orange County Coroner’s Office, stated an autopsy would be performed before the cause and manner of death were released to the public.

Fox also reported that the Valley Community Church issued a statement that Matthew Warren took his own life allegedly at his Mission Viejo home after spending most of the day with his parents. That was confirmed by the Orange County Coroner’s Office’s press release, which shows the location where the 27-year-old’s body was found was listed as 25152 Pradera Drive in Mission Viejo, and the date and time it was found as April 5 at 10 a.m.

The Orange County Coroner’s press release also states that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death, with report number 13-62692 listed for the male who died at his home on Friday. But an investigation by the sheriff’s office doesn’t mean they suspect it was not a suicide death; it just means they rule out all other potential explanations before allowing it to be ruled as such.

According to Deputy Daniel Aiken of the Orange County Coroner’s Office, Matthew Warren died after an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday. And according to a note his father sent to church staff following his death, the youngest child of the Warrens had been engaged in a battle to fight that type of action for a long time, CNN reported on Sunday.

“Only those closest knew that he struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts,” Rick Warren stated.

And as those who have a loved one who has a mental illness or depression knows, there are days when those who suffer from depression feel they can’t bear another minute of it. So it is a testament to the Christian faith that Matthew Warren survived his battle with mental illness and the dark depths as long as he did. But that is likely small comfort to his hurting family.

Hopefully those who have lost loved ones, including Christian loved ones, to the same kind of tragedy as Rick Warren’s son’s suicide, will realize that just because someone they loved took their own life, it does not mean that they will not see them in the life to come. In fact, Rick Warren’s Christian faith teaches that in eternity there will be no more sorrow or pain. So there will be no more mental illness and depression either. And isn’t that the hope of which Warren preaches? Earth certainly doesn’t provide a painless or ever joyful existence. Does it?
