The latest news that pop singer Ricky Martin comes out of the closet has been the talk of the gossiping entertainment world. Martin has been entertaining for years, since his early days in Menudo, all the way up to his career within the past few decades. He’s had hit songs including “Livin La Vida Loca”, “She Bangs” and “Shake Your Bon-Bon”. All of those videos included risque dance moves and female dancers, but Martin’s sexuality was never in question. Now the questions become whether Martin even needs to publicly declare his sexuality, and how will it affect his career?
A post on Martin’s official website stated:
“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”
Martin continued with “…these years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed.” (source: Ricky Martin website)
Many believe this revelation (which isn’t news to many) will boost Martin’s sales and success to new levels. He has an upcoming untitled tour this year, and with the announcement that Ricky Martin is gay, it’s expected a new, even stronger fan base will form. One writer even remarks that gay discos may start to proudly play “Livin La Vida Loca” as if it’s a new theme song (see article).
Do you think Ricky Martin made the right decision to come out of the closet? Will the news that Ricky Martin is gay hurt or help his career?
