It saddens me to write this because Alexander McQueen was a true master of his craft. The forty-year-old British fashion designer was found dead in his London home, in the West End, shortly after 10 a.m. GMT. The paramedics were called but McQueen was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem has been scheduled but police say his death is not being treated as suspicious–although not reports have been released that McQueen had killed himself.
Alexander McQueen’s death comes just days before the start of London Fashion Week and a month before he was going to reveal his new collection in Paris. His company, Alexander McQueen, released a statement saying: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family (Lee was McQueen’s real name).
Alexander McQueen has a brilliant imagination and inspired young designers. He created fashion shows–lights, music, stage, and the beautifully crafted clothing. McQueen was a four-time winner of the British designer of the year award as well as the international designer of the year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was awarded the CBE in 2003. Women all over the world love and admire his clothing, it is truly a great loss for the fashion industry and for McQueen’s family and friends.
My heart and prayers go out to all effected by the loss of a truly brilliant man.
Some of his designs…
