Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart: New Valentine’s Day Icons?

There are two ways to get through Valentine’s Day: Give in to the love overload or hide from the sight of Valentine coupledom and turn off your TV and radio. Thankfully the Washington Post prefers the former approach, and have thoughtfully compiled a “how-to-kiss” kit for those looking for smooch inspiration for the big day. So what are the iconic movie kisses that got audience’s oohing and aahing?

In no order of epicdom: Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in 2002’s Spiderman made the list, as did Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in the 1953 From Here to Eternity. And who could forget Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’s petting session in 2004’s The Notebook? Or for that matter, Leo and Kate’s doomed hot-and-not-really-that-heavy in Titanic (1997). Predictably, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable’s 1939 clinch in Gone with the Wind also made the shortlist, as did Demi Moore and the late, great Patrick Swayze in Ghost (1990), and Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire (1996).

Not to be left out of the icon stakes, cartoon characters get a look in too. WP include the Prince bringing to life a “just resting” Snow White in the 1939 Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the cutest dogs in the world from the Lady and the Tramp (1955). The only surprise on the list? The absence of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, but hey, maybe editorial at WP left Blockbusters in a hurry?

Then, at last, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella make their appearance on the iconometer. The movie love that made its way off-screen and became the phenomenon known as “Robsten” began—so legend has it—sometime around filming of New Moon/Eclipse, and hasn’t looked back since. While public interest in this relationship was never tepid, it’s now something of an international obsession—most of it media originated. So, here, on the eve of the great mawk-fest that is Valentine’s Day, are Rob and Kristen giving Scarlet and Rhett a run for their money—and succeeding.
