David Cronenberg–director of the film Cosmopolis, says Robert Pattinson has what it takes to be a ‘profound actor.’ Does he have plans for the Twilight actor’s future? Will it impact Rob’s life with Kristen Stewart?
According to Hollywood Life, Cronenberg said in a recent interview that Rob won’t reach his full potential as an actor until Twilight is in his past. Edward Cullen must be a distant memory for Rob to soar to new heights as an actor, but the Cosmopolis director has no doubt that will happen.
“I know [Rob's] big success is Twilight, but as you know Viggo Mortensen’s big success was Lord of the Rings, but it didn’t show him at his most profound as an actor,” David continued.
The director then went on to compare Robert Pattinson with actress Kiera Knightley.
“I feel that … Keira Knightley is really quite undervalued and underestimated as an actress,” he said. “I think in A Dangerous Mind she proves she is te superb level of actress she actually is. I’ve worked with some of the best, and she is up there; I feel the same way about Robert Pattinson.”
While it sounds like David Cronenberg is indeed incredibly impressed with Rob’s abilities, it’s important to note that he doesn’t mention anything about working with him in a future film. Is it wise for an actor like Robert Pattinson to put all his eggs in one basket–heeding the advice of one director over all the rest?
Twilight has opened many doors to Rob, as well as other members of the cast. It seems a shame to say he needs to be completely removed from the film and his role as Edward Cullen in order to achieve his full potential. Many actors can rise above well-known characters they’ve played and go on to achieve great success as actors.
Has David Cronenberg underestimated Robert Pattinson’s abilities or is he right on the money with his predictions? How might Kristen Stewart feel about Rob separating himself from his Twilight fame? After all, this film is where they both go their biggest breaks. Is it fair to make him throw it all away?
