Robert Pattinson thinks that playing a character who abuses women for money in Bel Ami is “fun.” Surely Kristen Stewart wouldn’t approve of this sentiment!
Rob wouldn’t really say something like that, right?
Well, the actor had to be okay with playing a bit of a d-bag when he signed on for Bel Ami. During a recent interview, he proudly pointed out that his character, Georges Duroy, gets to sleep with Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, and Kristen Scott Thomas. As we learned from Twilight, there’s nothing wrong with loving more than one person (or vampire or werewolf)—after all, Bella was torn between her feelings for Edward and Jacob. However, she only slept with one of them, and Duroy isn’t in love with the women he sleeps with in Bel Ami.
Instead, Robert Pattinson’s 19th-century antihero beds wealthy women as he attempts to social climb in Paris. According to Herald Scotland, Rob describes his character as lacking a conscience and believing that everything should just be given to him. Of course, he does put in a little effort by using sex to become successful, so he’s kind of like the Kim Kardashian of his day.
Duroy could also be seen as a vampire who happily feeds his desires with no remorse for his victims. So he’s basically as far away from Edward Cullen as Rob can get.
However, the actor might want to be careful about how he describes the character. He’s what he told the Herald when asked if he was playing Duroy just to show everyone that he’s more than just Bella’s obsessive bloodsucking boyfriend: “With Bel Ami, though, I guess there is something quite fun about going from Edward Cullen to playing a guy who pretty much abuses women to get money out of them.”
Keep in mind that Rob said that it’s fun to play the character, not to be like the guy. And it’s not like he would ever need to “abuse” girlfriend Kristen Stewart for her money, anyway—he could quit acting and live off his Twilight cash for the rest of his days if he wanted to.
Of course, the big question is, will fans want to see Robert Pattinson playing a character that uses and abuses women? Right now gals see him as a heartthrob and a romantic hero, and many of them might not want to have that image ruined by watching Rob play a horrible human being. However, they can always take comfort in remembering that he’s still a one-woman man who loves Kristen Stewart in real life.
So do you want to see Rob in Bel Ami, or are you upset that he’s trying hard to reach out to people who aren’t Twihards?
