Ryan Gosling’s New Movie to have a ’50 Shades of Grey’ Vibe?

Ryan Gosling hasn’t scored the role of Christian Grey in the 50 Shades of Grey movie just yet, but it sounds like his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, might be borrowing a few BDSM moves from the erotic novel.

Ryan cast his curvy Drive costar Christina Hendricks in the movie, which is described as a “modern-day fairytale.” Christina told Vulture that her character, a single mom struggling to raise two sons, gets “into a sort of predicament” while working at a “surreal” fetish club. Meanwhile her kids are off having their own adventure and discover an underground city. So part of the movie sounds like it’s aimed at adults, while the other storyline seems a little more family-friendly.

The term “fetish club” can refer to a nightclub where BDSM fans meet up to show off their best bondage wear while engaging in a little “play” with each other. So Ryan Gosling certainly knows how to grab guys’ attention—how many men have fantasized about Christina Hendricks wielding a whip while wearing a sexy dominatrix outfit?

Women are also becoming more aware of the existence of BDSM and fetish clubs because of 50 Shades of Grey, so surely Ryan’s movie is destined to become a big hit.

Unfortunately sexing up fairytales doesn’t always work out so well; the movie Sucker Punch was described as “Alice and Wonderland with machine guns,” but it couldn’t be saved from becoming a box office flop even though it featured Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Abbie Cornish donning skimpy outfits and going on an adventure in a fantasy world. But it’s to be hoped that a smart guy like Ryan will keep his fairytale classy, not trashy.

So do you think that How to Catch a Monster sounds like a winner already? Or do you find the combination of a fetish club and kids going on an underground adventure a little confusing?
