Last night fans of singer/songwriter Ryan Star were treated to an intimate acoustic performance at the newly opened Viper Alley Nightclub and Lounge in Lincolnshire, Illinois. This unique venue features bowling and a full-service restaurant and bar in addition to club seating and a concert stage. Viper Alley combines everything that’s great about both a coffeehouse and a nightclub. It’s a must visit venue for any music fan.
Last night’s show started out with an opening performance from singer/songwriter Aryk Crowder. Crowder is talented and personable. His musical vibe is like that of Jason Mraz but he has that rough quality that John Mayer once possessed before he became mainstream and popular. Crowder performed hits from his self-titled EP that included tracks such as “Roses” and “Ready, Set.”
But the real star of last night’s show, no pun intended, was singer/songwriter Ryan Star. Ryan Star first hit the music scene a few years ago when he opened up for David Cook the winner of the seventh season of the Fox reality series American Idol. His song “Losing Your Memory” from his latest album 11:59 was also featured in an episode of The Vampire Diaries last season.
Ryan Star’s music is simultaneously deeply emotionally and hard-edged guitar rock. Last night Ryan played not only all 10 amazing songs from 11:59 but he also surprised fans with excellent covers of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and R.E.M’s “Losing My Religion.”
And of course, Ryan also played songs from his début album Songs from the Eye of an Elephant, including “Take a Ride with Me” and “Waiting for Love.” Other highlights included live versions of “Start a Fire,” “Brand New Day,” “Last Train Home,” and “Breathe.”
Ryan Star is also known for making personal connections with fans (his performance of “Unbreak” was a fan request via Twitter) as well as meeting and greeting them and signing merchandise after shows. The show at Viper Alley last night was no exception. He is not only a genuinely talented musician but an incredibly down to earth person. He just wants to make good music for fans to enjoy.
If you haven’t heard of Ryan Star, it’s time to hear what you’ve missed.
