Same-Sex Marriage Fight “Probably Lost” Says Focus on the Family CEO

In an interview with WORLD Magazine, Jim Daly candidly says that young people are no longer accepting Focus on the Family’s views on same-sex marriage and that the hate group has “probably lost that one,” referring to marriage equality. He admits that LGBT activists are challenging him about Christian marriage, saying the response is often: “You guys haven’t done so well with marriage. Why are you upset about us having a try?”

Focus on the Family has traditionally been one of the most potent anti-family forces in the US, encouraging child abuse and spouting anti-gay rhetoric. To be fair, James Dobson, who advocated hitting children, is no longer in charge of the organization. However, the rabid anti-LGBT views are still intact with new CEO Jim Daly.

As if waving his hands in defeat, Jim Daly goes on to praise President Obama’s family in a last-ditch effort to win over non-Right Wingers:

“I do appreciate that he’s married to his first wife and raising his two children. We need more men like that. I once said that America would be better off if we had more families that reflected the Obamas, and many conservatives went nuts with that, but it’s true! Some of the conservative candidates that we put up—between a couple of them recently, I think they had seven or eight marriages. That seems a bit hypocritical.”

Focus on the Family has been a slowly waning force in the US discussion on cultural issues especially same-sex marriage. The admittance of defeat by the head of one of the ugliest religious organizations in the country should serve as a boost of confidence for all those working toward equal civil rights.

But Jim Daly never exits before a few nutty parting shots. In the typical manner of Evangelicals to make everything about themselves, he offered this nugget of analysis:

“Have we done such a poor job with marriage, is He so upset with our mishandling of it in the Christian community, along with our lust of the flesh as a nation, that He is handing us over to this polygamy and [same-sex marriage] situation in order to, perhaps, drive the Christian community, the remnant, into saying, ‘OK, there’s no no-fault divorce in our church’?”

Yes, Jim Daly, a deity reshaped the entire face of popular culture so you’d tweak your divorce bylaws. Who knew same-sex marriage equality wasn’t even the real issue?
