Governor Arnold Schwarzennegger apologizes for his move to cover a flag mural of the United States flag. The mural was order painted over by Schwarzennegger alongside a California freeway on the northern side of California.
The 35 foot flag mural was ordered removed by Gov. Schwarzennegger with grey on interstate 680. The mural was painted by two men after the 9/11 attacks. The painting was in clear view of drivers for nine years. After nine years someone asked if the mural were on state property. So down it came.
Sadly, it was covered up with grey paint on Wednesday morning.
USA Today reports that Schwarzenegger apologized saying, “apologies to the artist whose mural inspired drivers along 680 for over eight and a half years.”
I find this unconscionable. Not only is it disrespectful to our country, and the memory of those lost on September 11TH, it is a work of art. As Schwarzenegger gets ready to leave office, I think he pulled an anti-American stunt. Apology not accepted. I also find the timing of the mural’s removal over the July 4TH weekend an added insult to our nation.
