Selena Gomez was called culturally insensitive for wearing a bindi and other Bollywood type garb when she performed at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, and Vanessa Hudgens wore one at Coachella this weekend. Was she targeted as being insensitive, too?
According to a report from Hollywood Life, Vanessa rocked her bindi with a maxi dress and rainbow sunglasses while Selena donned hers for her stage production, along with Bollywood inspired clothing as well.
So what exactly is a bindi? It’s a forehead decoration worn in South Asia and is mostly seen in the countries of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It can represent nothing more than a cosmetic mark intended to enhance the beauty of the wearer or can have a deeper translation and is considered the ‘third eye’ on the path to spirituality.
It’s pretty likely that both Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez wear bindis for cosmetic purposes only, and intend no ill will whatsoever by doing so. Which of the two former Disney stars do you think pulled the look off better?
Would you vote for Selena or Vanessa? You can check out both young women wearing their bindis by clicking on the Hollywood Life link above.
