Since there weren’t any other big movie releases to challenge it, Martin Scorsese‘s “Shutter Island” prevailed at the box office this past weekend. It took in $40.2 million.

Being a career best for both the director, Martin Scorsese and actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. Neither one hasn’t had a good hit since their last movie together, “The Departed,” which made $26.9 million in it’s opening weekend in 2006.

This victory is really good especially for the studio Paramount. They had to contend with the suspicion about the movie’s quality the it’s commercial potential. They pulled it’s October 2009 slated release last year. The blamed the movie on marketing expenses.

This all generated curiosity about the project from DiCaprio, Scorsese and horror fans. Which all packed the theater this past weekend.
