SNL Snags Helen Mirren and Foo Fighters this Week

Dame Helen Mirren, fresh from new movie Arthur, as well as The Queen and Calendar Girls, is set to host Saturday Night Live this week. Musical guests The Foo Fighters are slated to appear as well.

Helen Mirren, the epitome of British class, will test her comedic chops with the likes of Andy Samberg, Kristin Wiig, and the rest of the SNL cast. Mirren has really started to make an even bigger name for herself here in the states.

While the bulk of her distinguished career involves dramatic roles, she is nothing short of brilliant in comedies. Mirren has been around the BBC and in films since 1966. This week, her new film Arthur opens.

Arthur is a retelling of the 1981 film of the same name which starred Dudley Moore as the hilarious drunken title character. In this incarnation, Helen Mirren takes the reigns as Hobson, Arthur’s ever faithful servant. Hobson was portrayed by the late Sir John Geilgud in the original film.

Look for the inevitable spoof of The Queen, considering the proximity of the upcoming royal nuptials, and the fact that Mirren makes a much better Queen Elizabeth than Fred Armison. Who knows, maybe she will talk the gals in the cast into making one of “those” calendars.
