So You Think You Can Dance 2012 returned August 15 following a two-week Olympic hiatus. After the top 14 performed iconic Mia Michaels contemporary pieces for judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Ballet Boyz guests Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt, the time came for the evening’s least pleasant task: the results of the viewer vote, and the elimination of four more finalists.
SYTYCD host Cat Deeley called all 14 dancers to the stage to begin the process. First to be addressed were Eliana Girard and Cyrus ‘Glitch’ Spencer, who both advanced to the top 10 with little ado. Tiffany Maher and George Lawrence followed; Tiffany joined Eliana and Cyrus in the safe camp, while George was relegated to the bottom six. Will Thomas was next to advance, but his partner Amelia Lowe was the first girl in danger. And it was all about trouble for Janelle Issis and Dareian Kujawa, who joined Amelia and George in the danger zone.
Addressing the final six contestants all at once, Cat revealed that ballroom dancer Lindsay Arnold and contemporary performer Matthew Kazmierczak were the final two in trouble. Witney Carson, Audrey Case, Chehon Wespi-Tschopp and Cole Horibe all left the stage, safe to dance again.
Nigel asked that all six endangered hopefuls perform solos. The girls performed first, with Amelia showing off her graceful moves through a veil of nerves, and Janelle doing what she does best: belly dancing. Lindsay was the most collected and the sharpest of the three. The guys followed. George got them started with some amazing leaps and spins, and Dareian followed with high-flying antics of his own. Matthew finished out the set by showing off his great fluidity, though his piece didn’t have quite the same height and scale as his competitors’.
When the verdict came in, the judges chose to save Lindsay and George, a move that not only granted each a spot in the top 10 show, but also the ability to join the SYTYCD tour. Left out of the party were Amelia, Janelle, Matthew and Dareian, who all bade farewell to their time on the show.
So You Think You Can Dance 2012 returns August 22 with the top 10 as they hoof it alongside a slate of popular show all-stars.
