‘So You Think You Can Dance’ 2012 Finale Recap — Eliana Girard, Tiffany Maher Get Racy with a Pole

The performance finale of So You Think You Can Dance 2012, which aired September 11 on FOX, featured the top 4 hopefuls as they performed a slew of fabulous numbers. One of the evening’s most memorable routines belonged to Eliana Girard and Tiffany Maher, whose racy Broadway piece left Nigel Lythgoe in a near-tizzy.

During rehearsals, choreographer Ray Leeper explained that his “When You’re Good to Mama” routine, which prominently featured a pole, was designed to “take burlesque to Broadway.” Although the prospect of performing a risqué piece might bring about blushes in some, the last two girls remaining in the SYTYCD competition were undaunted by the task. In fact, the oft-branded “girl next door” Tiffany relished the chance, claiming that “El and I are going to show everybody” that the girls can dominate the stage.

And dominate they did come showtime, with each alternately flipping and twirling and working the pole. Eliana’s pole work was especially impressive, and her final, gravity-defying move was inches from unbelievable.

Nigel was so flustered by the display that he initially took a pass when show host Cat Deeley asked for comments. Guest judge Rob Marshall called them “extraordinary” and “fierce.” Mary Murphy thought they were “fun and sassy.” When Nigel finally spoke, he confessed, “it’s so hard to think of anything to say that won’t get me into trouble” but wound up calling them a very harmless “fabulous.”

So did the pole dance routine buy more votes for Eliana Girard or Tiffany Maher? Which gal will walk away with the title of America’s favorite female dancer at the close of next week’s So You Think You Can Dance 2012 final results show? Tune in on September 18 and find out.
