So You Think You Can Dance 2012 came to a dramatic end September 18 with the crowning of America’s two newest favorite dancers. So which of the last two guys standing–ballet dancer Chehon Wespi-Tschopp or animator Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer–ultimately earned the win?
The big reveal didn’t come about until the final moments of the two-hour season finale extravaganza which featured a full slate of encore performances by select finalists and returning all-stars, brand new routines and the TV debut of tweener-who’s-actually-26 Carly Rae Jepsen singing “This Kiss.”
When the time finally came for SYTYCD host Cat Deeley to share the results of the vote, Chehon and Cyrus joined her on stage, Chehon looking slick in a black leather jacket and Cyrus playing up his soft side in pink. A pre-taped segment that featured a look back at the two guys’ thoughts on their SYTYCD expectations and experiences aired, and concluded with each sharing that the validation associated with the win would mean the world to them.
With quite literally the entire season behind them–and fellow season 9 female winner Eliana Girard in the wings ready to join her male counterpart on stage–Cat declared Chehon the victor. He looked completely floored by the news, and cried as he and Cyrus shared a long embrace.
Although it’s disappointing to see a good guy–and mind-blowingly talented animator–like Cyrus get the short end of the stick, Chehon is, by far and away, the more talented and polished all-around dancer of the two. Since only one guy would win, Chehon was the more deserving of the two.
So You Think You Can Dance 2012 may be a thing of the past, but the tour–which features the season’s top 10 finalists–begins October 23 in San Diego.
