Sonnen Out, Belfort In

Well, looks like Chael Sonnen taking steroids is the best thing that could’ve happened to Vitor Belfort. With another injury sidelining Belfort, things were looking down for “The Phenom” when he was forced to drop out of his number one contender match against Yushin Okami. The good news is that Belfort has become the new number one contender for the Middleweight title against Anderson Silva, which will take place early 2011.

With guys bumping up the chain, another Middleweight contender has been given a golden opportunity. Nate Marquardt, coming off a fresh TKO win against Rousimar Palhares, has taken Belfort’s spot in the Okami fight. Marquardt will face off against Okami in the main event at UFC 122 in Germany. Marquardt cannot waste this chance if he wants a chance at becoming Champion. Since losing to Anderson Silva back in 2007, he’s been fighting his way back up to the top until Chael Sonnen put an end to that run.

Belfort is looking for another win in the octagon. Since beating Rich Franklin in 2009, injuries have forced Belfort to watch as others have worked their way up to face Anderson Silva. Now, it’s his turn. Even though Sonnen was caught for steroids, he still proved to the world that no one is unbeatable, not even Silva, who remains unbeaten in the UFC. Belfort can put an end to that record with his striking ability that may very well rival that of Anderson Silva’s.
