With NBA free agents able to sign with teams as early as tomorrow, Caron Butler finished his own personal tour of prospective NBA cities in San Antonio. Meanwhile in Chicago, John Paxson, Gar Forman and the Bulls’ front office have prepared for what’s bound to be a whirlwind few weeks.

Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski has identified the Chicago Bulls as the team to beat for Butler’s services, citing a league source. The San Antonio Spurs, said to have made Butler their primary target in free agency, just finished hosting the former UConn Huskie Wednesday morning. Following the meeting, Butler tweeted:

“Just met with Spurs great visit first class all the way…”

The 31-year-old Chicago native has also met with the L.A. Clippers and New Jersey Nets. Both Clippers and Nets are able to offer the incumbent Dallas Mavericks small forward more than the $5 million mid-level exception offered by the Bulls and Spurs.

If Butler does indeed land in Chicago, his gritty style and natural scoring ability will be an excellent addition. Specifically on the offense where the Bulls are looking for a knock down shooter and player who can create his own shot to complement PG Derrick Rose.

No matter where Butler ends up going, one thing seems most clear, Butler won’t be announcing the “decision” to join his new team on a one-hour television special.
