Viewers of “Storm Chasers” watched with sadness as it was revealed that forecaster, Matt Hughes, had died. More details are being uncovered that Matt Hughes committed suicide. Matt apparently tried to hang himself.

What a horrible, tragic story. During the “Storm Chasers” episode, Matt Hughes seemed to be loving life. He had finally managed to put the TIV (Tornado Intercept Vehicle) directly into the path of an oncoming tornado. It was the first tornado that Matt had been through and it seemed like his adrenaline was pumping and he was on top of the world.

TMZ is now reporting that local law enforcement officers responded to a suicide call at Hughes’ home on May 14th, 2010, where they found him breathing but badly hurt. The officers were also able to determine that Matt Hughes had been drinking at the time of the attempted suicide. Tragically, Matt passed away 13 days after the suicide attempt. The Medical Examiner lists the cause of death as “Hanging.”

Matt Hughes is survived by a wife and two sons, who undoubtedly miss him tremendously. One can only imagine why Matt would try to take his own life when things seemed to be going so well for him. May he rest in peace.
