Summer Movies: A Guide to the Action, Thrills and Romance

Although it’s only May, the big summer movies push is already taking place. Between now and September, Hollywood showcases some of its best. Here is a guide to 2012’s summer movie fare.

Debuting this week is the long-awaited Avengers. Comic book fans are chomping at the bit to see Captain America and his superhero friends in action. Who wouldn’t be, with the likes of Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson sharing the screen together?

Although the buzz hasn’t been strong, Battleship has one thing fans want to see. That’s singer Rihanna in her first major film role. She’s backed by a solid cast with Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgard. Together they’ll fight aliens who want to take over Earth. The plot is trite, but true. The film debuts May 18th.

The Men in Black are back. The third time’s a charm as Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones play their iconic characters once again. This time, J has to travel back in time to save his partner, K. If he doesn’t succeed, K’s a goner and the timeline gets changed, putting Earth in jeopardy. Look for packed theaters on May 25th when this comedy comes to town.

With the first Snow White film, Mirror Mirror, failing to please, here’s hoping Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart and Thor’s Chris Hemsworth can deliver. Charlize Theron makes a nasty, but beautiful, evil queen but can she defeat the princess and true love? Fans will have to wait until June 1st to find out. That’s the film’s première date.

Fans have waited patiently for a G.I. Joe sequel and this summer they’ll get their wish. Retaliation begins June 29th. This time, the Rock (Dwayne Johnson) joins Channing Tatum along with Bruce Willis. That’s a threesome that’s sure to cause some damage. Cobra should beware.

The Amazing Spider-Man gets a reboot on July 3rd with Andrew Garfield and Emma Thompson in the lead roles. This film explores the mysterious disappearance of Peter Parker’s parents. Spidey fans remain divided. Some stay loyal to Tobey McGuire while others look forward to the change.

The Dark Knight Rises and falls this summer as Christian Bale’s superhero does his swan song. Batman’s still in hiding after confessing to Harry Dent’s crimes. But he comes out of retirement to save the day when Tom Hardy’s Bane decides to create havoc. The movie begins on July 20th.

Jason Bourne gets a comrade in arms of sorts in The Bourne Legacy. Actor Jeremy Renner plays Aaron Cross, another super agent the CIA has screwed one time too often. Cross gets angry, à la Bourne, and goes after his enemies. Some Bourne fans are lukewarm about this one. They want Damon back; however, Renner has a fan base of his own so look for Legacy to develop its own fan base when it starts August 3rd.

Total Recall gets a facelift with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel in the lead roles. The plot is basically the same; just the names and faces have changed. Fans of the older film may check this one out for comparison. However, the movie will need new fans to succeed when it premieres August 3rd.

The Expendables are back with a few new faces. The cast’s packed with muscle including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Liam Hemsworth, to name a few. Charisma Carpenter adds much-needed beauty to the canvas. The film begins August 17th.

That’s a summary of 2012’s summer movies. Enjoy!
