‘Supernatural’ Season 7 Episode 21 ‘Reading Is Fundamental’ Preview: Castiel and Archangels

Supernatural season 7 continues next week with episode 21, “Reading Is Fundamental,” written and directed by Ben Edlund. Sam and Dean are still trying to figure out how to stop Dick and deal with Bobby still around, and now they’re going to find more on their plate with Castiel waking up.

SPN Season 7 Episode 21 “Reading Is Fundamental” Promo

“Meg (guest star Rachel Miner) calls Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) and tells them Castiel (guest star Misha Collins) is awake and talking. Meanwhile, a teenager named Kevin (guest star Osric Chau) gets hit by a bolt of lightening and is turned into a reluctant prophet. Sam and Dean believe Kevin holds the key to defeating the Leviathans but must fight off two Archangels who want him for their own purposes.”

Sam and Dean have their hands on that package that Dick had been expecting, but they have no idea what he was planning to do with it. Then there’s Bobby, who was looking awfully vengeful spirit-like when facing off with Dick in Richard Roman Enterprises in “The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo.” However, they have other things to deal with. Castiel, who was last seen remembering everything after a case of amnesia and shifting Sam’s hallucinations to himself, is going to be waking up. Then there’s the poor prophet, Kevin, who’s going to find himself in the middle of everything even though he really doesn’t want to be.

The Supernatural season 7 episode 21 promo for “Reading Is Fundamental” (below) begins with Sam and Dean breaking apart rock. Then it moves to Castiel’s return, and he’s awake. Meg’s still around, and as spoilers for the finale, “Survival of the Fittest,” have revealed, she’ll be around then too, so she’s going to survive this episode. However, archangels are back, and as this series has shown, that’s never good—especially when they want something. Poor Kevin.

Castiel’s not exactly looking good in the ward, and things don’t seem to be looking up for him either when Sam and Dean get him out of there. It is always good to see him in the trench coat though, even if it is over the psych ward clothes. He ends up in the same room as archangels. The angel banishing sigil is back. That hasn’t been seen in quite a while. The promo ends ominously with Castiel’s “I’m sorry, Dean.” What is he sorry for? Is he apologizing again for what he did last season and to Sam? He and Dean are shown sitting at a table in the psych ward with the game Sorry between them, but was that just out before Dean showed up? He does swipe it off the table.

The promo does leave you with a few questions. Who’s lying on the road with the archangels in front of the truck? Is that Kevin? Why does one of the archangels slap Castiel? Is it because he freed the Leviathans? You can’t exactly blame her for that. What’s that bright light about? What will Castiel’s mental state be in this episode and when it ends?
