Supernatural‘s eighth season may be getting a bit of a later start as part of CW’s plan to premiere shows in October (SPN premieres October 3), but there are already some spoilers out about the new season.
SPN Season 8 Spoilers
The Winchester Family Business posted some spoilers from the upcoming Comic-Con edition of TV Guide. Robert Singer previews what’s coming up, including that season 8 isn’t going to be about Sam figuring out how to get Dean out of purgatory. Some time is going to pass before Dean’s back, but they’re going to use flashbacks to show just how that happens and what Sam was up to. It’s a smart idea since it means the Winchester brothers will be back together fast, but at the same time, it means that viewers won’t miss out on learning what happened and won’t have to just through conversations. How will Sam’s new love interest, who will first be appearing in episode 3, factor into that?
Something else that fans have been wondering about is what’s going on with Castiel. At the end of season 7, he just disappeared, seemingly leaving Dean alone to face the monsters of purgatory. He’s going to return, but they’re not sure yet what will happen there. Crowley didn’t seem quite done with Castiel yet, so it seems likely that in some way, he will be involved. Castiel was pretty crazy as season 7 was ending, but what will his mental state be like in season 8?
Speaking of Crowley, he’s part of Kevin’s storyline as well. Yes, Kevin will be back (did you expect anything different after Crowley had him taken away?), and Singer called him “an integral part of the year.” If you remember, Kevin could read something very important, and that’s why Crowley wants him—it’s all about the Word of God. As Singer explained, “Every year we start with a theme—this is our ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ year. This season-long story will be a quest. It’s about Kevin and the tablets and the Word of God.”
So yes, it’s back to being about angels and demons, but Singer went on to say, “it’s not apocalyptic but about who can gain control and keep demons in Hell or angels in Heaven.” How will it be bringing angels and demons back to the focus of the story in Supernatural season 8? It could work, but you do have to wonder with the show going into its eighth season if they can make sure to keep things fresh. Whatever happens, it’s always good to hear that Mark Sheppard’s Crowley is involved in some way. He has the ability to make weaker episodes just a bit better, and even though he can never be trusted, he’s someone you want to see show up even if it’s just to have some fun tricking the brothers.
There is also the possibility of some past guest stars returning, but Singer also previewed “one new character…a monster that Dean meets in purgatory.” Will this monster somehow follow Dean out however he gets back or will it just be part of flashbacks? Will it somehow end up part of the angels and demons arc? Purgatory is a pretty big mystery on the show, but it at least sounds like they’ll be showing more of it than they did of hell—hopefully—with the upcoming flashbacks.
