Supernatural season 8 premieres this week with “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” and it’s going to show what happens when Dean returns from purgatory and brings Sam back into the hunting life. How will things be different for Dean once he’s back?
SPN Season 8 Spoilers
According to KSiteTV, Jensen Ackles has previewed that Dean is going to be “a hardened warrior and ready to use those sharpened skills [he picked up in purgatory] in the real world.” However, Ackles also said, “It’s going to take him a little while to adjust to the lack of threat, and the lack of combat, and I think that that’s his motivation.” Dean is going to have spent a year in purgatory, and just in the premiere sneak peek (below) and episode 2 photos that have been released, there’s enough of a tease that you can tell how dark purgatory is going to be and can guess how that is going to change Dean. During that year, he’ll have been “fighting and battling non-stop, covered in blood, covered in mud, covered in dirt,” and that means it’s not exactly going to be so easy to adjust to what being “topside” means.
When Dean returns from purgatory, it will be with the character of the vampire Benny (Ty Olsson), and he’s going to be keeping some secrets with regards to the vampire. Benny is going to be the one who helps Dean get out of purgatory, and that’s something to keep an eye on. Speaking of purgatory and getting out, it’s still unclear what happens to Castiel there since Dean doesn’t say much about that in the sneak peek. Whatever happens in purgatory between Dean, Castiel, and Benny is something that will obviously have some effect on Dean once he’s out of purgatory and it’s something to watch for as he adjusts to being back. As the photos show, Dean is beginning to look pretty dark. How will that affect him as he gets back to hunting with his brother?
Regarding the Sam and Dean reunion coming up in Supernatural season 8, Ackles previewed, “It’s going to take a little bit of time to warm back up to the relationship that [Dean] has with Sam. There’s also what Sam did for the past year, which kind of compacts the odd element that these two brothers have spent time apart, but it’s what they were doing.” While Dean was fighting for his life in purgatory, Sam was out of the hunting life and living as normal a life as a hunter can get, with a new girlfriend in Liane Balaban’s Amelia. They were “living two different lives,” and that’s going to impact what happens when they’re back on the road together. It only makes sense that it would; Dean spent the year still fighting, still in the hunting life, while Sam didn’t. With this parallel to how the series began—with Dean getting Sam from Stanford—will there be any others? What will that mean as the season progresses? Will that have any impact on their attempt to do what sounds impossible and close the gates of hell forever?
