‘Supernatural’ Season 8 Spoilers: Purgatory’s Effect on Dean and Castiel

Supernatural season 7 ended with Dean and Castiel in purgatory, and while it has been teased that Dean is going to escape, not much has been revealed about what happens while they’re still there.

SPN Season 8 Spoilers

According to TVLine, showrunner Jeremy Carver has revealed that they’ll “explore [what’s going on with Dean and Castiel] heavily throughout the season through some pretty extensive flashbacks into purgatory.” He went on to say, “People are always referring to purgatory as hell, and purgatory is not hell. Purgatory is a really brutal, free-wheeling place, but it has different effects on different people. It will have a different effect on Cas and Dean as you already started to see [in the Season 7 finale]. But I will say what you think you saw might not be exactly what you saw.”

Purgatory does represent an unknown quantity. Castiel explained briefly in the season 7 finale, “Survival of the Fittest,” that purgatory is where monsters end up preying on one another for eternity. It’s still uncertain where Castiel went, which Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins did address at Comic-Con (video interviews here), but with Carver saying “what you think you saw might not be exactly what you saw,” you have to wonder what happened in that final scene. Could Supernatural season 8 show that Castiel did not leave of his own volition? Crowley obviously isn’t done yet with him, and it is possible he had something to do with what happened. After all, it’s Crowley. He’s quite the wild card.

It has already been revealed that Dean escapes purgatory with the help of a vampire Benny, played by Ty Olsson. Benny is a recurring character, and something that has been kept secret is just what happens there and what it means for Dean throughout the season.
