Actress Susan Sarandon and actor Tim Robbins parted ways after being together for twenty-three years. The couple had two children and were never married.

Sarandon is now speaking up about her split. “People were coming up to me in the street and saying, ‘I cried and cried when I heard.’ Well, I was sadder! I didn’t think it would ever happen, either” (via PEOPLE).

Well that kind of ruins it for all of us who are married without children, doesn’t it? However with a divorce rate so high in this day and age, who can argue with anyone’s philosophy on the matter?

As to why she and Robbins never married, Sarandon explains, “I thought that if you didn’t get married, you wouldn’t take each other for granted as easily. I don’t know if after twenty-something years that was still true” (PEOPLE).

It’s unfortunate that their love didn’t last, but their children are grown (18 & 21) and they may remain friends. As for some more Sarandon-relationship-philosophy? Here it is:

“Your relationship with people or with your job has to be a growing organism. It’s not something where you reach a certain point and then you start preserving it. You have to nurture it, you have to stay curious and hungry and foolish. Once you stop doing that, you get satisfied, and you get stuck” (PEOPLE).

And really, who wants to get stuck?
