Target stores are now the main target of the union, the United Food and Commercial Workers, in New York. The union has already begun a campaign focused on 5,000 employees in 27 stores across New York. Needless to say, the corporation is probably not thrilled by the union’s organization efforts.
On June 17, Target employees in Valley Stream, N.Y. will vote on whether or not they want to join the union. Organization efforts were brought about after some Valley Stream employees complained they had to rely on government aid because of low wages. It’s not surprising for employees to want more pay in this economy. When it comes to family, there never seems to be enough.
Retailing consultant Burt Flickinger said, “A lot of people are going to be shocked that Target workers would consider unionizing because of its very good image and because it’s known as such a fantastic philanthropic organization.”
Target counters claims by disgruntled employees and union representatives and states that they have competitive wages. However, another issue employees have with the corporation is that there are too many employees and too few work days assigned to each person thus hindering them from getting full-time benefits. This is obviously a tactic that allows companies to get full-time labor without giving full-time benefits.
As of now, the union has been playing nice with Target but that could quickly change if the corporation refuses to give in to union requests. It will be interesting to see the results of the June 17 vote. If employees choose to unionize, it’s going to be rough waters for Target. It really will but the lives of employees will be made easier.
