Texting While Driving

Text a message while you’re driving a car in Ohio and you could get a 200 dollar traffic ticket. That’s the thrust of a bill that state senators on the Highways and Transportation Committee held a hearing on recently. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen reports.

Listen here:  Texting While Driving

The report says that texting takes a driver’s focus off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, enough time to travel the length of a football field while driving 55 mph.

The AAA magazine this month for our area talked about texting while driving and driving while distracted.  They said that other distractions, like eating, yelling at your kids, or even just talking to a passenger, take one’s eyes off the road for 2 second intervals.  That, they said, makes the possibility of an accident twice as likely.

The audio clip above says that texting while driving, which takes your eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds makes you 23 times more likely to be in a crash or a near crash event.  And yet people still do it.  What’s really scary is that tractor trailer drivers admit to texting while driving too.

I remember seeing a Dr. Phil show a while back where they put a girl who always texted while driving into an automobile simulation.  She was shocked at how many near misses she was involved with in that simulation.  Even so, she couldn’t imagine herself not texting while driving.  Texting was more dear to her, obviously, than her life of the lives of others.

Personally, I don’t think that a $200 fine is enough.
